Radioactive Waste Issue
Myth: ? People do not know how to solve the issue of radioactive waste.
Facts: ! A solution to this problem is the construction of deep geological repositories. For instance, in the US radioactive waste repository will be established in Yuka Mountain, in Sweden – under the bed of the Baltic See. These repositories will be constructed deep underground in hard rock pits, yet, above the level of underground water.
Myth: ? There are gigantic amounts of radioactive waste in the world.
Facts: ! The amount of radioactive waste is relatively small and this amount is easily controllable with regard to its management. The amounts of radioactive waste can be reduced by reprocessing spent radioactive waste, while the reprocessed radioactive waste can be reused.
Myth: ? Radioactive waste cannot be transported safely.
Facts: ! Transportation of radioactive waste is performed using specially designed and manufactured transportation containers which remain unharmed even if dropped from several dozens of metres, in the event of a 1 hour fire, or if immersed deep under water for 8 hours. Certainly, for the transportation of radioactive waste radiation and physical safety requirements are strictly followed and the appropriate route is selected.
